Pool maintenance during the winter months
Maintaining a swimming pool in winter depends on whether you plan to keep it open year-round or close it for the season. In a mild winter climate such as parts of Cape Town, many pool owners keep their pools running with reduced maintenance.
If You’re Keeping the Pool Open
1) Reduce filtration time
– Run the pump for fewer hours than in summer (often 4–8 hours per day, depending on water temperature and usage).
– Ensure water still circulates adequately.
2) Monitor water chemistry
– Test water every 1–2 weeks.
Keep:
– pH: 7.2–7.6
– Total alkalinity: 80–120 ppm
– Free chlorine: 1–3 ppm
3) Remove debris regularly
– Skim leaves and debris from the surface.
– Empty skimmer and pump baskets.
4) Brush and vacuum
– Brush walls and steps periodically to prevent algae growth.
– Vacuum as needed, even if the pool isn’t being used.
5) Maintain water level
– Keep the water level around the middle of the skimmer opening.
6) Watch for algae
– Cooler water slows algae growth but doesn’t stop it.
– Address cloudy water or green spots promptly.
If You’re Closing the Pool
1) Thoroughly clean the pool.
2) Balance the water chemistry.
3) Shock the pool according to the product instructions.
4) Lower the water level if recommended for your pool type.
5) Drain and protect vulnerable equipment if freezing temperatures are expected.
6) Install a secure winter cover.
